If you look at the world’s most valuable companies, you won’t be surprised to find the likes of Apple, Microsoft, and Google. But one name does stand out: Tencent. The company is worth more than the likes of Facebook, Mastercard, and Samsung, and yet if you asked the majority of people what Tencent does, you’d be met with a confused look. The truth, is that Tencent does everything. Because whilst Tecent’s mascot is a friendly-looking penguin - a more accurate animal to embody this conglomerate would be a giant octopus, with tentacles reaching into almost every industry you can think of, all over the world. Whether you realize it or not, you almost certainly use products or services Tencent is involved with.

However in Tencent’s home country of China, it’s a very different story; everyone is aware that Tencent dominates their lives. And that’s because in China, Tencent has achieved the seemingly impossible: one app to rule them all. Tencent created an app called WeChat that's been dubbed ‘the everything app’ because almost all of China’s 1.4 billion population use this app for an average of 4 hours every day, more than the average American user spends on all social media apps combined.

And the reason people in China use WeChat so much is because it’s basically every app you can think of rolled into one. Its essentially Facebook, PayPal, Whatsapp, Netflix, Google, Spotify, Uber, Yelp, Tinder, Zoom, YouTube, Deliveroo, Amazon and lots lots more all in one single app. You pay your bills through it, call your friends through it, and essentially live your entire life through it. However one single company having access to literally all your data - from your exact location to your entire bank history to every message and call and search you’ve ever made - it’s a lot. And then it gets worse when you realize that the line between where Tencent ends and the Chinese government begins, is blurry. Meaning, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has access to all that information as well, making WeChat one of the most powerful surveillance tools ever.

Plus, private messages and images that are sent through Tencent’s apps like WeChat are scanned to see if they need to be censored - if you say anything the Chinese government doesn’t want you to, you could end up in jail, or disappear. The Chinese government has even openly confirmed that it can access deleted WeChat conversations.

Tencent has used its vast wealth and resources to expand into many industries. They are also the largest gaming company in the world - with revenue significantly higher than any competitor. Gaming is just one of countless different industries Tencent operates in. Also Tencent’s Payments division is nearly as big as PayPal’s entire business. And its reported WeChatPay generates over 1 billion payment transactions per day - more than Visa and Mastercard. Getting sick with COVID-19 can offer some protection from future illness, sometimes called “natural immunity,” but the level of protection people get from having COVID-19 may vary depending on how mild or severe their illness was, the time since their infection, and their age.

Getting a COVID-19 vaccination is also a safer way to build protection than getting sick with COVID-19. COVID-19 vaccination helps protect you by creating an antibody response without you having to experience sickness. Getting vaccinated yourself may also protect people around you, particularly people at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19. Getting sick with COVID-19 can cause severe illness or death, and we can’t reliably predict who will have mild or severe illness. If you get sick, you can spread COVID-19 to others. You can also continue to have long-term health issues after COVID-19 infection.

While COVID-19 vaccines are effective, studies have shown some declines in vaccine effectiveness against infections over time, especially when the Delta variant was circulating widely.

The mRNA vaccines do not contain any live virus. Instead, they work by teaching our cells to make a harmless piece of a “spike protein,” which is found on the surface of the virus that causes COVID-19. After making the protein piece, cells display it on their surface. Our immune system then recognizes that it does not belong there and responds to get rid of it. When an immune response begins, antibodies are produced, creating the same response that happens in a natural infection.

In contrast to mRNA vaccines, many other vaccines use a piece of, or weakened version of, the germ that the vaccine protects against. This is how the measles and flu vaccines work. When a weakened or small part of the virus is introduced to your body, you make antibodies to help protect against future infection.

Everyone ages 18 and older should get a booster shot either 6 months after their initial Pfizer or Moderna series, or 2 months after their initial Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine. People ages 16–17 may get a booster dose of Pfizer at least 6 months after their initial series of vaccines.

The CDC says A person is fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving all recommended doses in the primary series of their COVID-19 vaccination. A person is up to date with their COVID-19 vaccination if they have received all recommended doses in the primary series and one booster when eligible.

Getting a second booster is not necessary to be considered up to date at this time. A study by The Cleveland Clinic found that both previous infection and vaccination provide substantial protection against COVID-19. Vaccination of previously infected individuals does not provide additional protection against COVID-19 for several months, but after that provides significant protection at least against symptomatic COVID-19 According to the CDC mRNA vaccines do not contain any live virus. However, the vector virus does not have the machinery needed to integrate its genetic material into our DNA, so it cannot alter our DNA.

Being a College athlete is what many young athletes dream of. But there are many unspoken facts about being a college athlete that no one talks about. In this video, I'll be explaining the harsh reality of playing sports at a collegiate level.

1. Only 2% of high school students make it to college athletics and only 1% get a scholarship of any kind.

2. Being a college athlete is both very time-consuming and extremely taxing. This lack of time and energy throughout the day is the main factor for many athletes' burn-out in their sports and underperforming academically.

3. 98% of College athletes work a regular job after college, however, many of them are underequipped to do so because of their neglect towards academics in school. Furthermore, many athletes experience an identity crisis as what was the main part of their life for so long is suddenly gone.

College athletics is a multibillion-dollar industry, occupying a rare space globally in which commercialized sports intersect with higher education. The ongoing FBI investigation involving payoffs to NCAA men’s basketball players shows what has been widely known: Some college athletes possess value beyond their scholarship and other allowable benefits. Critics of the system say these players are often missing out on their best opportunity to capitalize off their value, as any non-athlete can do as a college student.

What if NCAA athletes were permitted to receive outside sponsorship money in exchange for use of their name, image or likeness? NCAA President Mark Emmert recently said this approach, known as the Olympic model, is “well deserving of serious consideration inside the context of college sports.” What would be the potential implications in a number of areas, such as the value for athlete pay, educational achievement, competitive impact, NCAA governance, women’s sports, high school/youth sports, and fan interest?

On May 1, the Aspen Institute Sports & Society Program will host "Future of College Sports: Reimagining Athlete Play." We will
explore what college sports might look like if it adopted the Olympic model.
