Myspace was once the most visited website on the internet, even outranking Google. But in 2004 the myspace founders had a meeting with a young guy named Mark Zuckerberg who was offering to sell them his website, which was then called The Facebook. The price he wanted was $75 million dollars, but Myspace turned him down - and why wouldn’t they? At the time, Myspace was thriving, and was by far the most popular social media platform. So, how did Myspace go from being worth billions of dollars and one of the most loved sites on the internet, to being nothing but a nostalgic memory?
With its quirky interface and customizable profiles, MySpace represents the road untaken - the path social media could have gone before Facebook crushed the competition. But the reasons Myspace failed are not what you might think. And the rise and fall of Myspace is certainly not your typical business story. This video is the truth about what happened to MySpace - how an internet empire was both built and destroyed.

The domain name Myspace.com was initially bought for an internet storage business, essentially an early version of cloud hosting like Dropbox or google drive. But like many early internet businesses, this file storage company never made it, especially after the dot com bubble burst and investors stopped pouring money into internet companies. However a guy called Chris DeWolfe bought the MySpace domain, thinking it might be useful in the future. Of course he was right - but for a while, he did nothing with it. Instead, him and a friend called Tom Anderson founded a direct email marketing firm called ResponseBase, which created email newsletters for other companies. Little did they know that this business partnership would lead them to creating a billion dollar company with millions of users. Of course, the Myspace story would not end well - today Facebook makes billions from Facebook ads, whilst Myspace is just a site people nostalgically think back to. So what happened to Myspace? Welcome to the incredible story of Myspace - including why myspace died, how Facebook won, and where is Tom from myspace now?

Now the 22-year-old ace has beaten her legendary rival once again, this time for bragging rights as the highest-paid female athlete in the world.

Osaka earned $37.4 million the last 12 months from prize money and endorsements, $1.4 million more than Serena, setting an all-time earnings record for any female athlete in a single year; Maria Sharapova held the prior record with $29.7 million in 2015.

The ascension puts an end to a decisive winning streak for Williams, who has been the world’s highest-paid female athlete each of the past four years, with annual pre-tax income ranging from $18 million to $29 million. The 23-time grand slam champion has collected almost $300 million during her career from endorsers who have swarmed the 38-year-old star.

Osaka’s rise to the head of the charts was a perfect convergence of several factors. She first proved herself on the court, with back-to-back grand slam titles at the 2018 U.S. Open and 2019 Australian Open. That plus her heritage—a Japanese mother and Haitian-American father—helped separate her from the pack; at only 20 when she won her Open title, she had a cool factor and engaging personality.

Osaka’s roots are crucial to her endorsement stardom. She was born in Japan. When she was three, she and her family moved to the U.S., settling on Long Island and then heading to Florida; older sister, Mari, also plays on the pro circuit.

If you look at the world’s most valuable companies, you won’t be surprised to find the likes of Apple, Microsoft, and Google. But one name does stand out: Tencent. The company is worth more than the likes of Facebook, Mastercard, and Samsung, and yet if you asked the majority of people what Tencent does, you’d be met with a confused look. The truth, is that Tencent does everything. Because whilst Tecent’s mascot is a friendly-looking penguin - a more accurate animal to embody this conglomerate would be a giant octopus, with tentacles reaching into almost every industry you can think of, all over the world. Whether you realize it or not, you almost certainly use products or services Tencent is involved with.

However in Tencent’s home country of China, it’s a very different story; everyone is aware that Tencent dominates their lives. And that’s because in China, Tencent has achieved the seemingly impossible: one app to rule them all. Tencent created an app called WeChat that's been dubbed ‘the everything app’ because almost all of China’s 1.4 billion population use this app for an average of 4 hours every day, more than the average American user spends on all social media apps combined.

And the reason people in China use WeChat so much is because it’s basically every app you can think of rolled into one. Its essentially Facebook, PayPal, Whatsapp, Netflix, Google, Spotify, Uber, Yelp, Tinder, Zoom, YouTube, Deliveroo, Amazon and lots lots more all in one single app. You pay your bills through it, call your friends through it, and essentially live your entire life through it. However one single company having access to literally all your data - from your exact location to your entire bank history to every message and call and search you’ve ever made - it’s a lot. And then it gets worse when you realize that the line between where Tencent ends and the Chinese government begins, is blurry. Meaning, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has access to all that information as well, making WeChat one of the most powerful surveillance tools ever.

Plus, private messages and images that are sent through Tencent’s apps like WeChat are scanned to see if they need to be censored - if you say anything the Chinese government doesn’t want you to, you could end up in jail, or disappear. The Chinese government has even openly confirmed that it can access deleted WeChat conversations.

Tencent has used its vast wealth and resources to expand into many industries. They are also the largest gaming company in the world - with revenue significantly higher than any competitor. Gaming is just one of countless different industries Tencent operates in. Also Tencent’s Payments division is nearly as big as PayPal’s entire business. And its reported WeChatPay generates over 1 billion payment transactions per day - more than Visa and Mastercard.
